Probably one of the most famous and well supprted clubs in the world Manchester United was founded in 1878 as the works team of a local railway. Based at the equally well known stadium Old Trafford Manchester United have enjoyed massive success over the years with some of the best players the world has ever seen.
Attendances at the club are consistantly higher than any other team in English football perhaps an indication of the club’s success. They are one of the richest clubs in the game at the moment and in recent times have won 20 major honours.
Tragedy struck in 1958 when on February 6th the plane carrying the players home from Munich crashed on take off. Eight players lost their lives – Geoff Bent, Roger Byrne, Eddie Colman, Duncan Edwards, Mark Jones, David Pegg, Tommy Taylor and Liam “Billy” Whelan along with fifteen other passengers. Manager Matt Busby was not expected to survive the crash but made a miraculous recovery and left hosptial two months later.

The team was rebuilt through the ealy 1960s with players such as Denis Law and probably one of the most famous players of all time George Best. Matt Busby resigned in 1969.
Since 1986 Manchester United have been under the leadership of Alex Ferguson in the 1998-99 season he guided Manchester United to the treble – The Premiership, FA Cup and UEFA Champions League in the same season. He was subsequently knighted for his services to football.
The popularity and success of Manchester United looks set to continue. Fittingly 50 years after the Munich air disaster they won the Premier League title finishing two points clear of Chelsea and the European Cup final for the third time.
