Resembling a bathroom or kitchen sponge, SpongeBob Squarepants is a sea sponge, whose name is derived from his appearance. He is a sponge, called Bob, who wears square pants. His usual attire consists of a white shirt, red tie, and his trademark brown square pants or trousers with knee high white socks and clumpy black shoes. He is bright yellow in colour and has cheeky goofy front buck teeth, rosy cheeks and huge blue eyes. As he is a sponge his body is spongy and holey!

Creator Stephen Hillenburg was once a marine biology teacher, so it comes as no surprise that SpongeBob Squarepants is set under the water. Hillenburg reportedly drew his inspiration for the character from acts such as Pee-wee Herman and Laurel and Hardy. Hillenburg attributes SpongeBob's 'unique' high pitch laugh as being inspired by Woody Woodpecker and Pop eye, claiming he wanted him to stand out. Hillenburg's vision was to create a naive goofy nerdy sponge that annoys other characters whilst at the same time displaying optimism, tolerance and energy. Hillenburg's vision worked, as SpongeBob Squarepants has become hugely popular and iconic transcending age and gender and picking up coveted awards on the way. Marketing has seen the franchise grow to feature SpongeBob clothing, SpongeBob bedding, SpongeBob curtains, SpongeBob toys, games and even deals with fast food restaurants and cereal companies and a SpongeBob Movie. As soon as SpongeBob is woken by the sound of his fog horn alarm clock, he knows it is time for work, which happens to be as a Fry cook at Krusty Krab. In his spare time SpongeBob has to attend boat driving school, but he also loves Jellyfishing and having adventures with Patrick. SpongeBob also has a pet snail called Gary, who, for some reason or another, likes to meow like a cat.

Amongst the other inhabitants of Bikini Bottom you will find, Patrick Star, SpongeBob's best friend. Patrick is pink and lives under a rock, his light may not be bright, but he is always there for his best friend.

The manager of Krusty Krab is called Mr. Krabs, who is a sailor and has a daughter called pearl. Mr Krabs lives in an anchor.

SpongeBob spends a lot of time with his good friend Sandy Cheeks. She is bizarrely a squirrel who lives in a bubble dome and astronaut suit. As she is a squirrel from Texas and not a marine creature, she has to wear her suit all the time to breathe. Sandy loves karate and still hibernates like squirrels do.
