Created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, Spiderman was the first superhero to break out of the role of teenage side kick. Spiderman is the alter ego of Peter Parker, a high school student who epitomises teenage 'self-obsessions with rejection, inadequacy and loneliness'. Lee and Ditko wanted to create a superhero with whom teenagers could identify - somebody who would embark upon a journey of self discovery that would lead to the knowledge that "with great power comes great responsibility". They also ensured Spiderman was hyphenated to distinguish him from Superman.

Spiderman starred in the comic books Amazing Spiderman and Ultimate Spiderman, as well as guest appearances in other Superhero comics. More recently the big screen incarnation of Tobey Maguire as Spiderman has brought the franchise to millions of movie goers and new fans world wide.

Though there are some discrepancies between the comic books and the Spiderman Movies, the story of Spiderman generally goes as such: Peter Parker is an orphan who lives with his Aunt May and Uncle Ben. As a teenager, Peter Parker is incredibly intelligent and gifted but is seen in school as a 'bookworm'. He is slightly nerdy and weedy and bespectacled, as such he is often teased and ridiculed by his peers. His best friend is called Harry Osborn. Peter Parker has a crush on the very popular Mary Jane Watson (played in the movie by Kirsten Dunst) who is evidently out of his league.

During a school trip to a genetics laboratory at Columbia University, Peter is taking photos of Mary Jane when he is bitten on the hand by a spider. Alas this is not an ordinary spider, but a genetically engineered "super spider". This causes Peter to feel unwell, and upon his return home he collapses. When he awakes the next morning he finds that he no longer requires glasses as his sight has been corrected, and he has also developed a very fit muscular body. His 'spider sense' is developed and he has, amongst others, the ability to shoot webs from his wrist.

Peter enters a wrestling competition to test his strength, he wins, but is cheated out of the prize money. Peter retaliates by letting a thief escape. Sadly he lives to regret this decision, and his beloved Uncle Bob is later killed by the same thief that Peter let escape. This event changes Peters life and he decides to use his powers for the forces of good. Romance, adventures, joy and tragedy ensues. Spiderman defeats many villains and criminals and makes friends and enemies along the way, including his arch nemesis the Green Goblin.
